The Chanel Cruise 2021/22 collection was presented at the Carrières de Lumières cave, southern France.
Inspiration from Jean Cocteau’s film
Jean Cocteau’s black-and-white film `Testament of Orpheus` in a beautiful scene with the image of a man and a black horse descending into the Carrières de Lumières cave, his silhouette prominent in the paintings.
It must be added that, Jean Cocteau – a French poet, graphic designer, illustrator, playwright and filmmaker, was also Coco Chanel’s soulmate.

Catwalk in Carrières de Lumières cave
Carrières de Lumières cave in Les Baux-de-Provence, southern France is also known as ‘the rock of the south’, Les Baux rock is a type of limestone that is usually white or yellow.
The white limestone blocks typical of the area were easily worked and were used to build Glanum, the medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence and to construct Les Baux Castle.
Carrières de Lumières Cave.
In 1959, Jean Cocteau filmed “Testament of Orpheus” because he was attracted by the beauty of this place and the surrounding landscape.
This year, Chanel brought to Carrières de Lumières the 2021/22 Cruise collection, a group of models performed in a cave with a dove release at the end of the show reminiscent of the scene from the movie `Testament of Orpheus`.

Fringed, black and white, lavender, tweed
“Because of the simplicity, precision and poetry of Cocteau’s films, I wanted to create a very pure collection, with two very distinct tones, made up of bright white and deep black… To recreate
White color, white details, pure as in Virginie Viard’s imagination.
Lavender flowers are embroidered around the waist of white pants.
The two colors black and white alternately appear throughout the collection, bringing a feeling of purity as designer Virginie Viard wanted.
Chanel’s tweed outfits this season were created in a sustainable way by craftsmen from the famous artisan house Lesage.

UNTIMELY INSPIRING APARTMENT ON RUE CAMBON
Gabrielle Coco Chanel’s apartment on Rue Cambon, Paris was recently reopened after a major renovation.
A video and black and white photos of the collection were also taken in the apartment space for use in the press release.

Music performance
After the performance closed on screen, Chanel lovers enjoyed a musical performance by musician and Chanel ambassador – Sébastien Tellier and special guests Vanessa Paradis, Charlotte Casiraghi, Juliette Armanet and Angèle.
The songs: Sunny, La Dolce Vita, Baby One More Time… are hummed under the sunshine of Les Baux-de-Provence, bringing a gentle, deep feeling.
